Movable bridges used to be held closed above certain temperatures and sun angles, on guidance from people who understood the metal. That guidance seems to have lapsed: this is the third or fourth year a major bridge has jammed, and today it's Chicago's DuSable Lake Shore Drive bridge, stuck for hours while the city hoses it down.
