Altman did not say AI will blow up the global economy. He said neoclouds are overbuilding.
The viral framing and the podcast quote are not the same claim.
- What he said: On the Sources podcast Altman said he is worried about the world's compute buildout and sees new neoclouds planning gigantic capacity without the revenue or a buyer to support it.
- What he exempted: He is not worried about OpenAI's own buildout and expects to use all its planned compute profitably. The warning is aimed at others.
- What is old: He has called investors overexcited about AI since August 2025. The new part is naming a segment. The global-economy framing comes from the posts, not the podcast.
