Jelly Roll's Kimmel week ends in tears and a fight over unity

The country star closed a week of guest-hosting Kimmel with a tearful plea to love your neighbor, no exemptions. The reaction split hard.

  1. The backlash: The loudest camp says he spent the week attacking Trump and his own fans, then played victim: the tears read as damage control and the jokes as career suicide.
  2. The defense: The most visible defense comes from inside country music, not from the left: speaking your mind when half your audience may disown you for it is about as American as it gets.
  3. The meta take: A third camp skips the jokes entirely and argues the industry owns him now, reading the week as a loyalty pledge to Hollywood rather than a conviction.

Texas cut state money for Flock cameras. The cameras are not gone.

Gov. Abbott ordered Texas agencies to stop funding Flock's AI license-plate cameras. The order cuts state money, not the cameras themselves.

  1. What happened: On August 28, Abbott directed state agencies to pause and block funding for Flock Safety cameras, citing privacy concerns and reported misuse. Some cities were already cancelling contracts.
  2. What triggered it: The Texas Tribune found a state authority had put at least $30 million into about 3,200 Flock cameras since 2023. A Lufkin officer faces 100 counts for allegedly using them to track 11 people.
  3. What the order does not do: Local departments can keep running Flock cameras on local or federal money. The pause stops state funds only, so the network's future rests on local decisions.

Tom Cruise is returning for Days of Thunder 2, with Anne Hathaway joining him.

The NASCAR sequel is scheduled for June 2, 2028, nearly four decades after the original film.

  1. What is confirmed: Cruise will reprise Cole Trickle and produce the Paramount film. Hathaway will co-star; Jonathan Levine is directing a script by Will Staples.
  2. Why Daytona: Cruise announced the sequel at Daytona International Speedway before NASCAR's regular-season finale, returning the project to the setting most associated with the 1990 film.
  3. The timeline: Talk of a sequel surfaced in 2024. The new announcement supplies the cast, director and firm summer 2028 release date.

Coyote vs. Acme opens today. The completed film survived a planned shelving.

Warner Bros. shelved the finished movie in 2023. Public backlash reopened a path to sale, and Ketchup Entertainment is now releasing it theatrically.

  1. Why it disappeared: The roughly $70 million live-action and animation hybrid was completed in 2022, then shelved when Warner Bros. decided a tax write-off was preferable to release.
  2. How it returned: After public and industry pressure, Warner Bros. offered the film for sale. Independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment acquired it for about $50 million.
  3. What happens now: The film opens in US theaters August 28. Its rescue shows that a completed shelved project can still find a buyer, but only after rights and distribution change hands.

GTA VI was shown running on PS5. A 30fps launch is not officially confirmed.

Rockstar's extended look is real in-game PS5 footage. Reports say the demonstrated build ran at 30fps, but final console performance modes remain unannounced.

  1. What Rockstar confirmed: The new footage was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5. GTA VI remains scheduled for November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.
  2. Where 30fps comes from: A creator who attended Rockstar's preview reported that the demonstrated console build was running at 30fps. That is a development snapshot, not a published final specification.
  3. What remains open: Rockstar has not announced launch-day frame-rate modes, a PS5 Pro performance target or whether a 60fps option could arrive later.

Dolly Parton died after a brief cancer battle. The cancer type was not disclosed.

Parton died Tuesday at 80 in Nashville. Her publicist later identified cancer, but no further diagnosis was released.

  1. Confirmed: Her publicist said Parton died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center after a brief battle with cancer.
  2. Still unknown: Neither her family nor representatives identified the cancer type, stage or date of diagnosis.
  3. Vaccine claims: Posts linking her death to COVID vaccination offer no supporting medical evidence. Earlier vaccination does not establish what caused her cancer.

The Don Lemon case is under review. It has not been dismissed.

A federal judge ordered the Justice Department to provide grand-jury records while considering Lemon's challenge to his indictment. The review is unusual, but it is not a dismissal.

  1. What happened: The judge requested normally secret grand-jury material to examine claims that prosecutors used irregular procedures or misstated facts and law.
  2. What is pending: The court is deciding whether any alleged misconduct justifies disclosure or dismissal. No charge was dismissed by this review order.
  3. The case: Lemon pleaded not guilty to federal civil-rights charges tied to his coverage of a January protest at a Minnesota church. He says he was reporting, not participating.

The Hawk Fire is still moving. Evacuation maps matter more than viral totals.

The fast-moving wildfire near Reno has destroyed homes and forced mass evacuations. Acreage, containment and evacuation figures are changing; people in the area should follow live county instructions.

  1. What is confirmed: The fire spread rapidly through the Peavine Peak area as shifting winds challenged crews. Nevada declared a state of emergency and mobilized state resources.
  2. Why totals differ: Fire size, containment and evacuation zones can change between updates. A screenshot or post may be accurate when published and stale soon afterward.
  3. What residents should use: Follow Emergency Washoe and its linked perimeter map for current zones. Evacuate immediately when ordered, and use 911 only for emergencies.
  4. Evacuation support: Washoe County lists the Reno-Sparks Convention Center for evacuees and Regional Animal Services separately for pets. Check the official page before traveling.

GTA VI clips are leaking. Rockstar's official reveal is still August 27.

Unofficial gameplay clips are circulating ahead of Rockstar's extended look. Reporting and copyright removals make the leak credible, but captions, claims and the state of the leaked build are not all confirmed.

  1. What leaked: An unidentified account began posting apparent GTA VI gameplay on August 18. The footage appears to show access to a playable build, though not necessarily the complete game.
  2. What takedowns show: Clips were removed on copyright grounds, and Take-Two has pursued account information. That supports treating the material seriously, not every attached claim as verified.
  3. What remains unclear: The leaker's identity, access route, build completeness and many interpretations of specific clips remain unconfirmed.
  4. Official timeline: Rockstar's extended look remains scheduled for August 27, first on Netflix and later that day on Rockstar's YouTube channel and GTA VI site.

Two dog-food recalls are circulating. They cover different products and risks.

Fromm recalled two canned foods over possible metal contamination. Oma's Pride recalled one lot of frozen raw chicken food over Salmonella. Neither notice covers every product from either brand.

  1. Fromm recall: The recall covers Turkey Pâté and Diner Classics Milo's Meatloaf Pâté canned dog food with the listed lot codes and a March 2029 best-by date. No illnesses or injuries had been reported.
  2. Oma's Pride recall: The recall covers one lot of Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe in 6-pound frozen bags: lot BB012729. Three dog illnesses were reported; no human illnesses were reported.
  3. Different hazards: Fromm's notice concerns possible metal pieces. Oma's Pride concerns Salmonella, which can affect dogs and people handling contaminated food or surfaces.
  4. What owners should do: Check the exact product and lot in the FDA notices. Stop feeding affected food and follow the listed return, disposal and cleaning instructions.

The move is reported. The royal comeback is not.

Reports that Harry and Meghan will return to Britain for an extended stay quickly became claims of a permanent homecoming, a restored royal role and a full family reconciliation. The reported plans are significant, but narrower: the children are expected to attend British schools while the couple remain outside working royal life.

  1. What is reported: The family plans an extended stay beginning this fall, with Archie and Lilibet enrolled at British schools. Reporting says they intend to live at a private, non-royal residence outside London.
  2. What is not changing: Harry and Meghan are not expected to resume duties as working members of the royal family. They also plan to retain their home in California and property in Portugal, so the move is not yet a clean break with their life abroad.
  3. Why the family context matters: The return follows a recent visit with King Charles and years of dispute over security, media treatment and the couple's departure from royal duties. More time in Britain may ease contact with the family, but that is not the same as a restored institutional role.
  4. What remains speculation: Public explanations involving money, divorce, a negotiated royal comeback or a complete reconciliation have not been established. Harry declined to discuss the reports, and no formal plan from the couple or Buckingham Palace has supplied those motives.

Lala missed landfall. The damage did not.

Hurricane Lala's center passed south of the Big Island without landfall and weakened to a tropical storm. Across X, the near-miss headline sits beside severe flooding footage, moving outage totals and early damage counts. The two are not contradictory.

  1. Offshore, not harmless: Lala's eyewall and rain bands still brought hurricane-force gusts and nearly three feet of rain in places.
  2. Outage snapshot: More than 200,000 homes and businesses lost power at the peak; fewer than 60,000 remained out by Sunday morning. Viral totals can describe different moments.
  3. Damage count: Floods swept homes from their foundations and damaged roads and bridges. Exact totals remain assessments, not a settled statewide inventory.
  4. Recovery hazards: Airports and harbors are open, while highway repairs continue. A statewide brown-water advisory warns that runoff may carry sewage, bacteria and chemicals.
