The Senate advanced a college-sports reset. The fight is over who it protects.

The bill promises one national system for paying and transferring athletes. It also shields key NCAA rules from lawsuits.

  1. Where it stands: The 74-24 vote ended debate; it was not final passage. The bill still needs another Senate vote and agreement from the House.
  2. What athletes get: Athletes gain a federal right to NIL money, contract rules, injury protection and stronger health safeguards.
  3. The trade-off: Schools get more power to retain players, and some NCAA rules gain legal protection. Backers call that stability; critics call it less freedom for athletes.

Macklemore was dropped. Every other opener then left Ed Sheeran's tour.

A dispute over pro-Palestinian remarks became a test of who controls a stadium tour—and who owns its decisions.

  1. Why he was dropped: Macklemore says several venues refused to host him after remarks supporting Palestinians. The tour promoter then removed him.
  2. Sheeran's position: Sheeran says the promoter made the call. He tried to find a compromise but does not want his concerts turned into a forum on Gaza.
  3. Why it grew: Aaron Rowe, Beoga, Lukas Graham and Finneas all quit, turning one removal into a tour-wide revolt.

Supporters who want that agenda preserved need to vote.

Three third-down flags flipped Packers-Vikings; CBS's rules analyst disagreed

Green Bay led 22-17 in the fourth quarter and stopped Minnesota three times. Each stop was erased by a flag on the go-ahead drive.

  1. The three calls: Illegal contact on Javon Bullard on third and 11. Roughing the passer on Chris McClellan on third and 3, with J.J. Watt and rules analyst Gene Steratore disagreeing on air. Defensive holding on Xavier McKinney on third and 5, wiping out an end-zone interception.
  2. What followed: Aaron Jones scored from three yards and the two-point try made it 25-22. Minnesota outscored Green Bay 29-0 from there to win 39-22.
  3. The crew: Shawn Hochuli's crew led the league in false starts per game in 2025 and ranks first over five seasons for false starts plus holding, per Sharp Football's referee data.

Houthis now hold Yemen's whole Red Sea coast up to the Bab el-Mandeb

A 36-hour push took Mocha, Dhubab and Perim Island. Iran's allies now sit on both oil choke points around Arabia.

  1. What fell: Mocha fell on Thursday, September 10; Dhubab and Perim Island in the strait followed on Friday. About 12% of global trade passes the Bab el-Mandeb each day.
  2. Why Saudi Arabia is exposed: With Hormuz disrupted since February, Riyadh pushed its East-West pipeline to seven million barrels a day and sent 21% more oil out through the Red Sea. Attacks forced a pipeline shutdown, and the crown prince pressed Trump twice in a day for strikes; Trump offered targeting help instead.
  3. Can they close the strait: Analysts split: some see a more capable force with better Iranian weapons, others say the Houthis cannot sustain a blockade and that a hint of danger already reroutes ships.

Listening to civil servants in Parliament, what strikes me is the disconnect from the private sector that funds them. Out there, nobody has a guaranteed pay rise, a comfortable pension or a job that survives the company running out of money; every month the wages, rent and tax must be found. Inside the state it is four day weeks and nobody sacked, spending money the productive economy earned. Government should run the way every small business must: money is finite, performance matters, failure has consequences. Tone rewrite only. Tomorrow the leaders of Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland meet to sign a declaration planning the breakup of the United Kingdom. I think that is a mistake. We are one people on these islands, too interwoven for a border not to hurt all of us. Ask a separatist "Am I a foreigner?" and none can say yes. The union is what let us flourish; put the borders back and we compete against our own brothers and sisters. And a vote would not settle it: every election afterwards would be fought by a rejoin faction. Tone rewrite only. Claims remain the author's and are not independently verified.

Trump's 250-foot arch: test pits by September 21, a court demanding 48 hours' notice

Interior Secretary Burgum announced excavation on the 250-foot arch on Columbia Island within two weeks. Veterans suing to stop it asked Judge Tanya Chutkan for a restraining order.

  1. What starts: Government lawyers say it is an archaeological survey of four test pits, no earlier than September 21, restored by October 31. Full construction would take two to three years.
  2. What is missing: No final approval from the National Capital Planning Commission, an unfinished FAA review, and no act of Congress. The administration cites a century-old Memorial Bridge statute.
  3. The court: Chutkan questioned the president's authority in April, when the government agreed to 14 days' notice. She has now ordered 48 hours' notice before any activity. No ruling yet.

Kansas State Fair debate: Marshall booed on tariffs and medical debt

Sen. Roger Marshall and Rev. Adam Hamilton debated Saturday at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. The crowd drowned out Marshall from his opening statement.

  1. What drew the boos: Tariffs, which Marshall said are working, and his debt collection as an OB-GYN, when he sued about 700 patients and called it common business practice. Chants of 'You don't live here' and 'Shame on you'.
  2. The rules question: No audience rules were set. Replies note that State Fair debates have always let both campaigns pack the bleachers, so this reads as a recruiting failure too.
  3. What Hamilton said: He hit Marshall on tariffs, Iran and healthcare cuts, and said courage is standing up to your own president. Both fielded questions about out-of-state homes.

Texas trailed by 20 entering the fourth. It beat No. 1 Ohio State anyway.

Three late touchdowns turned a flat night in Austin into a 24-23 win, sealed by a goal-line run with 25 seconds left.

  1. How it turned: Manning found Wingo for the first touchdown, then Smothers scored twice from the goal line. An Ohio State missed field goal kept the door open.
  2. Why it mattered: CBS called it the largest comeback over an AP No. 1 in at least 25 years and Texas's first win from 20 points down since 2007.
  3. What fans argued: Ohio State fans blamed a tired defence and the missed kick. Texas fans saw a team that survived three poor quarters and finally found its offence.

People protested Mayor Mamdani yesterday, on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, not over anything he has done but because he is a Muslim in a city struck by Islamist terrorists 25 years ago. That was anti-Muslim bigotry, and it had no place in New York. That New Yorkers elected a young Muslim to lead their city a quarter century after 9/11 is something the whole country should be proud of. Prejudice against his faith did not stop a majority from giving him a chance. Patriots love Americans in the real world, whatever their race, religion or creed. I have loved Warcraft since I was a kid. I'm a Horde fan, orcs for life, and that's where World of Warcraft lost me. The game never respected the Horde as a faction. First came the Undead, whose theme sits outside Thrall's shamanistic Horde. Then TBC added Blood Elves with paladins, and the Horde stopped looking like burly, savage but honorable monsters. Today's BlizzCon was supposed to bring Classic Plus for vanilla fans like me. Instead we got Undead paladins and a new elf who can join either faction. The story has the same problem: Sylvanas went from a side character to the most powerful being in the universe and humiliated Horde legends like Saurfang. Elves are all Warcraft seems to think about, and I'm done. Tone rewrite only. Claims remain the author's and are not independently verified.

Trump's $5,000 dividend: a midterm pledge costed at about $1.2 trillion

Trump promised every adult citizen $5,000 if Republicans keep the House and Senate. The bill would run about $1.2 trillion and no funding plan has been set out.

  1. What was promised: At the Republican midterm convention in Dallas on September 9, Trump said a Trump dividend of $5,000 would go to every adult citizen if Republicans win both chambers, to be spent in the US.
  2. What it would cost: About $1.2 trillion on 240 to 245 million adult citizens. JD Vance pointed to tariff revenue; the Tax Foundation says the payout would absorb nearly all projected tariff income over a decade.
  3. The pushback: Republicans Chip Roy and David Schweikert asked how it would be paid for. Federal law bars paying people to vote; election law scholars say a promise to all adults falls outside it.

I was an accountant, so watching the $5k dividend debate is painful. We already carry enormous debt. Only about half of us pay income tax, and about half of those pay under $5k, so there is no separate fund that makes this free. There is no free lunch. Now self-described anti-socialists are arguing for redistribution because this time their side is doing it.
