AfD at 44 percent in Saxony-Anhalt, just short of a majority

Projections give the AfD its strongest state result ever, more than double its 2021 vote. The number to watch is whether it reaches an absolute majority of seats.

The projection

ZDF at 18:27: AfD 44.1, CDU 18.5, Linke 9.2, SPD 8.8, Greens 8.7, BSW 4.8, FDP 2.4. Bloomberg's exit poll had the AfD at 44.5. In 2021 the CDU won with 37.1 percent and the AfD took 20.8.

Why the majority matters

Every other party keeps a non-cooperation firewall against the AfD. More than half the seats lets it govern alone; if BSW clears the 5 percent threshold that gets harder. Early projections have it just short.

Turnout

65.3 percent by 16:00, about 24 points above the same point in 2021, whose final figure was 60.3 percent. Posts calling it a political earthquake are reading an interim number.
