Meta's youth-safety settlement is worth up to $17.1 billion. Part of that total is conditional.
The proposed deal ends the multistate trial and adds protections for users under 18. It still requires court approval.
- The payment: Meta will pay at least $12.1 billion over ten years. Another $5 billion depends on other major platforms reaching similar state settlements.
- Teen limits: Users under 18 would face a two-hour daily limit across Facebook and Instagram, overnight restrictions, fewer notifications and stronger age checks.
- What it resolves: The agreement settles state claims that Meta used addictive design and misled the public about youth safety. It is a proposed settlement, not a trial verdict.
