Why grounded?

Personal attacks and unrelated accusations repeatedly diverted the replies from their original focus.

Grounded

A post revisits King Charles's wool burial demonstration. Replies disagree over what it shows about materials and how clothing should be valued.

Sides

• Natural breakdown: Wool can return to the soil after use, making it preferable to persistent synthetic clothing.
• Lasting synthetics: The surviving synthetic jumper suggests greater durability, making synthetics preferable for clothes intended to last.
• Wool costs: Wool's price reflects processing and skilled labour, with coarse British fleeces often better suited to carpets.

Why grounded?

Dismissive replies turned a disagreement into a pile-on against the people involved.

Grounded

Ben Affleck criticized celebrations of Digger's box office failure. Replies dispute whether supporting creative risk should change how audiences judge the film.

Sides

• Creative risk: Celebrating Digger's failure discourages expensive creative risks that audiences do not have to finance themselves.
• Message fatigue: Digger deserves its failure because audiences are tired of being preached to about global warming.
• Commercial expectations: Expecting Digger's script to become a box office hit was a mistaken judgment from the start.

Why grounded?

Personal insults and repeated partisan accusations crowded out the practical questions in replies.

Grounded

Steve Hilton proposes new water infrastructure to halve bills. Replies question water availability and how his plans would reach households.

Sides

• Storm capture: California should invest in capturing stormwater rather than letting heavy rainfall go to waste.
• Supply limits: Building more dams and reservoirs cannot increase supplies without identifying enough water to fill them.
• Legislative strategy: A water plan needs a strategy for getting projects through an opposing state legislature.
• Agency costs: High household bills call for closer scrutiny of how water agencies manage distribution costs.

Why grounded?

Insults and sweeping accusations repeatedly pushed replies away from engaging with each other.

Grounded

Digger addresses European leaders about dependence on oil. Replies dispute whether the speech accounts for regional differences in consumption and climate policy.

Sides

• Regional differences: Europe's progress on renewables and emissions makes a critique of American consumer lifestyles a poor fit.
• Continuing dependence: European societies still depend on fossil fuels for heating, transport and materials despite their climate progress.
• Political audience: The speech addresses European leaders responding to a European disaster, rather than ordinary people defending consumer habits.

Why grounded?

Personal taunts and fan rivalries repeatedly displaced replies that engaged with opposing views.

Grounded

A post reports 116 entries for the new Asian pop Grammy. Replies dispute whether its field and boundaries offer meaningful recognition.

Sides

• Wider recognition: A dedicated award gives artists beyond K-pop, including Southeast Asian, Chinese and Japanese acts, more recognition.
• Regional separation: Asian musicians should be judged for their music without being separated into categories defined by region.
• Small field: A field of 116 looks small for a continent with so many musicians and prominent absences.
• Substantial field: A hundred and sixteen entries is substantial; counting countries does not make the field too small.

Why grounded?

Partisan labels and sweeping accusations displaced direct engagement with the qualifications raised in the replies.

Grounded

Long Beach voted to consolidate most council comments upfront. Replies dispute how far the policy limits residents' ability to speak on specific agenda items.

Sides

• Public accountability: Moving comments before staff presentations cuts residents' chance to respond to the council's proposals and challenge its decisions.
• Policy exceptions: Public hearings keep separate comment periods, and the chair can extend the opening 90-minute window.

Why grounded?

Brief dismissals kept cycling without engaging with the more qualified reaction in the replies.

Grounded

Resident Evil topped $320 million at the worldwide box office. Replies disagree over how its artistic quality compares with its commercial success.

Sides

• Overall disappointment: Resident Evil's box-office success does not make it a good film or a worthwhile viewing experience.
• Ending disappointment: Resident Evil is a good movie overall, but its weak ending lets the experience down.

Why grounded?

Repeated accusations of dishonesty displaced direct engagement with the distinctions raised in the replies.

Grounded

Jason Kenney cites the UCP's merger commitment to a united Canada. Replies dispute whether that history should determine the party's current independence stance.

Sides

• Founding mandate: The UCP's merger commitment to a united Canada should still guide its stance on Alberta independence.
• Adopted principles: A merger proposal does not bind today's party when its adopted principles omit loyalty to Canada.
• Changed circumstances: Canada's changed political circumstances justify revisiting the UCP's original commitment to remain in the federation.

Why grounded?

Confident predictions kept cycling through dismissive replies instead of engaging with the different reasons offered.

Grounded

A post forecasts box-office totals for three DC films. Replies dispute whether recognizable characters and release timing justify higher box-office forecasts.

Sides

• Sequel strength: Man of Tomorrow's larger cast and Brainiac could attract more international viewers than Superman.
• Lower forecasts: Man of Tomorrow could finish below $400 million, making the original $598 million prediction too generous.
• Horror appeal: Clayface's Halloween release could carry it past $100 million if audiences and critics respond well.
• Limited recognition: An obscure Batman villain without an established DCU Batman is unlikely to draw a large audience.

Why grounded?

Personal dismissals repeatedly displaced direct engagement with the different explanations offered in the thread.

Grounded

Kelly Clarkson and Art of Play give conflicting accounts of a shopping encounter. Replies dispute how facts and perceived power should shape sympathy.

Sides

• Underdog framing: Public sympathy follows whoever convincingly presents themselves as wronged, regardless of their wealth or fame.
• Celebrity responsibility: A celebrity's large audience makes publicly escalating a disputed shop interaction unfair to a small business.
• Shopping misunderstanding: Offering a comparable bird may explain the exchange without implying the customer could not afford it.
• Sales responsibility: A shop should prioritize making the sale rather than turning a willing buyer away.

Why grounded?

Repeated political taunts crowded out the replies addressing the original post more directly.

Grounded

Britain's rejoin-EU petition is due for debate on Monday. Replies argue over the mandate for membership and what another parliamentary discussion can achieve.

Sides

• Rejoin urgency: Rejoining the EU should move quickly to end uncertainty rather than leave Britain in prolonged economic limbo.
• Limited mandate: The petition's small share of the population cannot justify reversing Britain's earlier decision to leave the EU.
• Membership terms: Rejoining cannot be judged without knowing the membership terms Britain would be required to accept.
• Procedural limits: Westminster Hall debates lack a final vote, so another petition discussion offers no assurance of change.

Why grounded?

Repeated personal attacks crowded out the replies explaining their objections more directly.

Grounded

Naheed Nenshi urges Thanksgiving voting plans to preserve Canada. Replies dispute provincial priorities and whether family celebrations should become occasions for political campaigning.

Sides

• Canadian unity: Albertans should make referendum voting plans with friends and family to help preserve Canada as a country.
• Provincial autonomy: The referendum should prioritize Alberta's interests, sending Ottawa a message rather than focusing on saving Canada.
• Holiday boundaries: Politicians should let families enjoy Thanksgiving together without turning their holiday gatherings into another political campaign.

Why grounded?

Fandom taunts repeatedly displaced the replies explaining what their comparisons actually meant.

Grounded

Touring Data reports Jay-Z's Yankee Stadium concert grosses. Replies dispute whether those figures justify comparisons of drawing power across stadium shows and arena tours.

Sides

• Drawing power: Jay-Z's stadium grosses show substantial demand that rivals' streaming popularity does not necessarily translate into concert attendance.
• Venue differences: Drake's arena shows cannot be compared directly with stadium concerts, where capacity allows much higher grosses.

Why grounded?

Personal jabs repeatedly pushed the exchange away from its more specific arguments.

Grounded

A post criticizes wealthy influencers for gambling and AI sponsorships. Replies argue over financial incentives, personal choice and the standards creators should follow.

Sides

• Sponsorship responsibility: Wealthy creators should reject gambling promotions when other sponsors can provide substantial income without normalizing gambling.
• Personal choice: An adult creator choosing gambling sponsorships does not directly affect other adults or justify their interference.
• Financial incentives: A sufficiently large sponsorship offer can secure generational wealth, making refusal unrealistic even for successful creators.
• Artist support: Creators paid to promote products should support human artists when producing the content for those sponsorships.

Why grounded?

Denominational insults repeatedly displaced the replies addressing the substance of the original exchange.

Grounded

A post challenges the Pope's rejection of capital punishment. Replies dispute how Christian scripture and church teaching should guide punishment, mercy and public executions.

Sides

• Scriptural permission: Genesis and Romans authorize capital punishment, so a universal church prohibition conflicts with the scriptural standard.
• Developing application: Capital punishment is a changeable practice rather than dogma, allowing the Church to revise its application.
• Mercy and redemption: Christian teachings against retaliation favor mercy, preserving an offender's opportunity for salvation rather than ending their life.
• Execution spectacle: Capital punishment can be justified without livestreaming executions or celebrating the death of those being punished.

Why grounded?

Dismissive pile-ons pulled attention away from the few replies engaging with the disagreement.

Grounded

KATSEYE's reported Grammy submissions prompted criticism of the group. Replies argue over musical merit and placement in the Asian pop category.

Sides

• Awards undeserved: KATSEYE's music does not merit a Grammy nomination, let alone an award.
• Cultural placement: An Asian category makes sense for KATSEYE because the group's members are mainly Asian.
• Language eligibility: The Asian category requires meaningful Asian-language lyrics, which KATSEYE's listed submissions lack.

Why grounded?

Personal attacks and speculative blame crowded out direct engagement between the opposing positions.

Grounded

Donald Trump announced a deal to obtain Russian diesel. Replies dispute its consequences for fuel prices, sanctions and support for Ukraine.

Sides

• Sanctions conflict: Buying Russian diesel undercuts Congress's sanctions policy and betrays Ukraine, warranting Trump's removal from office.
• American interests: Securing cheaper diesel serves American interests and does not provide grounds for Trump's impeachment.
• Ukrainian autonomy: Ukraine is defending itself independently against invasion, with outside support rather than foreign control.
• War costs: Ending the Iran war would address fuel costs without making America dependent on Russian supplies.

Why grounded?

Calls for punishment and sweeping accusations crowded out the replies addressing the original question.

Grounded

A report describes Iran's executions of protesters during the war. Replies dispute whether outside pressure can curb repression or warrants American involvement.

Sides

• Pressure limitations: External military pressure does not automatically weaken Iran's internal security apparatus or stop repression.
• Regime removal: Iran's ruling regime should be removed in response to the reported executions.
• No involvement: Iran's executions are an internal issue that does not justify American involvement.

Why grounded?

Personal jabs and shifting arguments kept otherwise substantive replies talking past each other.

Grounded

Zack Polanski lost the Holborn by-election despite increasing the Green vote share. Replies dispute how to interpret the result and his leadership.

Sides

• Electoral progress: Tripling the Greens' vote share in a Labour stronghold shows progress despite Polanski losing the seat.
• Inherited support: Polanski largely inherited Andrew Feinstein's former voters, so the result shows less new support than claimed.
• Parliamentary leadership: A serious political party should have its leader in Parliament, making Polanski's defeat a leadership problem.
• Leadership continuity: Party leaders can serve effectively outside Parliament, so losing this seat does not justify replacing Polanski.

Why grounded?

Replies talked past one another rather than addressing each other's specific objections.

Grounded

Asteroid City's roadrunner was filmed as a puppet with digital cleanup. Replies dispute how practical effects should be defined and valued.

Sides

• Physical craft: A physical puppet gives the roadrunner natural movement and the handcrafted feel that the filmmaker wanted.
• Digital dependence: Removing puppeteers and rebuilding backgrounds still requires visual effects, exchanging one kind of digital work for another.
• Budget tradeoff: Practical effects require choreography and production time that smaller films may struggle to afford.

Why grounded?

Repeated dismissals turned practical feedback into a pile-on about other players' competence.

Grounded

NBA 2K27 received a patch that drew enthusiastic praise. Replies split over shooting consistency, defensive effectiveness and how much ratings should decide outcomes.

Sides

• Shooting consistency: The patch makes shooting easier and more consistent, improving the experience of landing well-timed shots.
• Defensive balance: The patch leaves defense too weak, with shot contests ineffective and stealing attempts often punished.
• Contested chances: High defensive ratings should not automatically prevent baskets when attackers still have opportunities to score.

Why grounded?

Repeated accusations of fearmongering pushed substantive objections into an escalating exchange of dismissals.

Grounded

Florida’s Amendment 3 would expand homeowner tax relief. Replies argue over how local governments should respond to the resulting loss of revenue.

Sides

• Property relief: Larger homeowner exemptions and a 5% commercial assessment-growth cap would ease pressure on property owners.
• Budget restraint: Local governments should meet the revenue reduction by cutting spending instead of charging taxpayers more.
• Cost transfer: Local governments could replace lost homeowner revenue with higher business property taxes, rents and service fees.
• Service protection: Lost property-tax revenue could reduce the funding that sheriffs need to keep local services running.

Why grounded?

Competing predictions repeatedly turned into dismissals of taste and accusations about hidden influence.

Grounded

Variety places Olivia Rodrigo and Olivia Dean ahead in its Grammy forecast. Replies dispute the picks ahead of voting and nomination announcements.

Sides

• Rock appeal: Olivia Rodrigo’s rock-influenced album deserves Album of the Year ahead of Dean’s project on musical merit.
• Classic grooves: Olivia Dean’s timeless grooves deserve Album of the Year even for listeners who also enjoy Rodrigo.
• Wider field: Rosalía, Noah Kahan, Raye and Madonna deserve consideration beyond a race limited to the two Olivias.
• Early predictions: Voting has not started, so an early forecast should not be treated as an awards outcome.
