A House committee voted for a 20-year Bitcoin hold. That is not the same as buying more.
The Financial Services Committee advanced H.R. 8957 by 28-21. The amended bill would centralize qualifying federal Bitcoin and make it much harder to sell.
- What moved: This was a committee vote, not passage into law. The bill still needs the full House, the Senate and the president.
- What it locks: Qualifying federal Bitcoin—including eligible forfeited coins—would move to Treasury custody and be held for at least 20 years. The bill also requires annual public reserve reporting and an independent audit.
- What it does not do: It does not authorize a taxpayer-funded Bitcoin shopping spree. It orders a study of lawful, budget-neutral ways to acquire more and expressly rules out new taxes, borrowing and deficit spending.
